How Does Irish Jewelry Hallmarking Work?

REMEMBER, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE
IRISH TO HAVE GOOD TASTE OR
APPRECIATE QUALITY GOODS.

Why Stamp Fine Jewelry?

In Ireland it is illegal to describe or sell anything that is silver, gold, palladium, or platinum unless it has been stamped at the Assay Office in Dublin Castle.

Each actual piece of fine jewelry Biddy Murphy ships to you is made in Ireland and bears a hallmark stamp.

What the Markings Mean

Each stamp shows the item has gone through the Assay Office's metal testing process to ensure the purity of the metal in the piece that you are purchasing.

A piece of fine jewelry made in Ireland will feature the Assay Office Mark called the Hibernia, the mark for the type of metal (925 for sterling silver, a 14 and 585 for 14 karat gold) along with the maker’s mark indicating which artisan created the piece.

FAQ: Hallmarked Jewelry

What does Irish Hallmarked mean on Jewelry?
Hallmarking is when precious metals such as silver, gold, platinum and palladium are officially marked by a stamp or a series of strikes. This is typically carried out by a government body, independent of the jeweler who made the piece in order to verify the authenticity and purity of the metal used within that piece of fine jewelry.
What does “Hallmarked at Dublin Castle” mean?
All Irish jewelry must be inspected by the Dublin Assay Office. Assaying is an investigative process, conducted in a laboratory to ensure the purity of metal used in fine jewelry. The Dublin Assay Office is located in the famed Dublin Castle.
Can you hallmark your own jewelry?
Although the maker’s mark is listed on fine jewelry, all Irish jewelry must be inspected independently by the Dublin Assay Office. The Assay Office serves as a consumer protection agency, ensuring the purity of the metal used in fine jewelry. The Assay Office adds the hallmarks after they have completed the inspection process.
Is it illegal to sell jewelry without a hallmark?
It is illegal to sell fine metal jewelry crafted in Ireland without an official hallmark stamp. If a piece of fine jewelry does not bear a hallmark stamp, it usually means that the ring is not made with fine metals like sterling silver or gold. It may contain a cheaper base metal. Irish hallmarks protect you from getting lower quality metal in your fine jewelry.
How do you identify the hallmarks?
The Irish Hallmarks include: 1) The Hibernia is the official mark of the Dublin Assay Office. It is a woman with a harp, the national symbol of Ireland. 2) the metal (925 = sterling silver, 10 / 417 = 10K gold, 14 / 585 = 14K gold, or 18 / 750 = 18K gold) 3) the maker’s mark - a stamp from the artisan who crafted the jewelry.
Does all silver have a mark?
All sterling silver products should bear the mark of the country of origin along with the 925 stamp signifying that the metal has been inspected and is 92.5% pure silver. Although every piece of fine jewelry must bear the hallmarks of Ireland, lower priced costume jewelry may not be stamped because it doesn’t reach the threshold for the purity of metal standards.
